What America Means to Me: A Promise
When I think of America, I find myself thinking of the term “promise”. I believe that the ultimate promise of America is that of the American Dream: essentially the idea that if you work hard in this country, you can make a better life for yourself; however, is this truly the case? Is the promise that America is built on essentially a false promise?
I have manipulated a few images to portray the evolution of possible disgrace upon the promise of the American Dream. The first image portrays hopefuls, who appear blinded by the promise ofAmerica, as depicted in the clear representation of the American flag which covers their eyes. They carry with them their hopes and dreams which have yet to be tarnished. In the following image, a larger group is shown with their blindfolds appearing manipulated from the last picture. While the blindfold still resembles the flag, it has clearly been distorted, now appearing more limited, representing the limitations to the promises ofAmerica. Also, the “hopes and dreams” aspect has disappeared from this image, representing the harsh reality of the modern American Dream, in that a better life cannot be guaranteed.
