What America means to me? Well, I’ve attached a few photographs which (try to) sum up my sentiments about American culture. Inherent in American culture is the rampant racism: those who fight to defeat it (MLK) and those who fight to perpetuate it (The HillBilly). In regards to our conversation regarding the politicization of the English language I have included the lovely and ignorant photograph of the sign which proudly hangs outside Geno’s Steaks in South Philly. Surely, English is the tongue of most Americans, but to directly forewarn a future paying customer their native tongue is unwelcome in our nation? Now that’s “messed-up.” Those of you who have studied abroad (perhaps unless you have gone to France), everyone is so patient as you struggle to find the right word in a foreign language or as you excessively use your hands while speaking English loudly to get your questions answered. Your business is not shunned, it’s welcomed. America: the land of the racist and impatient?
