Well, hey…this is TempleHonors, right? So why not geek out a little?? Anyway, though I am not even in CST (college of science and technology), there is a lot to be said about science, education, and America. Why do most people hate science? Why does science/do scientists in America get treated differently when compared to the treatment in other countries? Why is there such a divide between classes and education? What I tried to tackle in this project is answering these questions in a different, theme park based series of answers. Let me allude to them via some examples:
1. Location: Arlington, Virginia (basically any suburb surrounding Washington, D.C.). This location is easily accessible by public transportation, is near a main hub for internal tourism (think Smithsonian?!), and the contrast between D.C. and Arlington is shocking. D.C. is for lack of a better term seen as sketchy. Arlington is not. This highlights class differences in education. Compare the schools in both of these regions, go for it.
2. Target Audience: 13 and up.
If people learn early on about and develop an appreciation for science, it is easier to learn when they grow up. Also, by the age of 13, the concepts presented in the park are easy to grasp.
3. Watson, Crick, and Franklin, roaming “Biorealm”
How many people know who these people are? How many people know what they look like? How many people know what they did?! How many people know what DNA is? More questions, I know…but these three roam the Biology section of the park. This is more so a comment on the fact that more people probably know who Jenna Marbles//a random youtube cat is than these three.
The rides that are featured in the map basically just showcase certain basic scientific principles (Classic Coaster and momentum/energy, Electron FunHouse and basic atomic theories). The park is divided into five parts: opening attractions (2), “Plasmacore,” “Biorealm,” “Chemrealm,” and “Physyrealm.” Each one serving a distinct purpose in transmitting scientific knowledge in a fun manner. I could continuously rant about the other rides and distinctions on the map, but I don’t want to bore anyone! If you have any questions, just comment!!
