As previously discussed, Barbie can evoke beliefs and stereotypes about weight, image and beauty in young girls; however, the physical proportions of Barbie are literally impossible to achieve. Therefore, it is nice to see some Photoshopped manipulations of Barbie popping up online to show a more “modern” depiction of a stereotypical American woman, who is not a size zero, such as the following images. I just wonder what would happen if Barbies like these were ever sold by Mattel. Would Mattel brand them as the “obese” Barbie, in order to appeal to a broader audience, or would they simply create “thicker” Barbies, and subtly advertise the weight difference, to emulate the more average size of women today? I also wonder how America would respond to these dolls. Would they be insulted, relieved, humored? It’s interesting to think about.
