This image of Barbie was created to help bring awareness to domestic violence. Although many people believe Barbie has the perfect life with her convertible, her dream house, and her many friends, this image shows a Barbie whose life is not perfect. This image suggests Barbie may hide her imperfections. This picture works to humanize Barbie by demonstrating that her life is not perfect, and she, like many of us, has difficulty accepting that. Barbie is scared to accept that her life may not be perfect. Despite her black eye, stitches, and busted lip, Barbie puts on makeup, does her hair, and continues to act as though nothing is wrong. Instead of acting hurt and vulnerable, Barbie hides the pain that she is experiencing and continues to smile through it. To me, this image is strong because it disregards the idea that Barbie and her life are perfect in every way. The brilliance of this image is that it brings together two controversial things, Barbie and domestic violence, to make a clear statement about speaking up when you are a victim of domestic violence.
