I just came across this article for the ultimate 9-layer grilled cheese sandwich, and it seemed almost too appropriate for this blog to be believable. There it is, an American snack that has its own day devoted to celebrating it, and this particular sandwich epitomizes excess. Typical grilled cheese is fatty, cheesy, and carb-loaded American deliciousness, but this takes it one step further – or maybe 8 steps further? This sandwich is diverse – it contains a large variety of cheeses and ingredients like pesto, bacon, velveeta (which is sort of cheese, I guess), mac n cheese, and tater tots. Complete with a little American flag, this gargantuan meal is enough for 3 people, and with a minimal amount of vegetables – just pesto, two slices of tomato, and the tomato soup it is served with.
I think it is everything that American food is – a huge serving, relatively culturally diverse ingredients (mainly the many types of cheese), fried and buttery, and mainly composed of empty calories (mostly fats, sugars, salts, and carbohydrates with little protein, fiber, or other nutrients), and there’s even a little American symbol perched atop the sandwich in case you couldn’t guess where it was from.
