This book written about Elvis is the image I have chosen as it highlights the main reasons I believe that Elvis has become an American Icon to me. Firstly the image of the Las Vegas sign is one always associated with Elvis for me. This is due to the fact that when I imagine Las Vegas it always creates images of the strip and also of the shotgun wedding in an Elvis Presley wedding chapel. Even for people who were not alive during the time Elvis became successful, it has so dominated the film and television industry that it seems that no film based in Las Vegas is complete without a cheap Elvis impersonator grinding into the camera. The second reason that I feel it represents Elvis is due to his nickname ‘the King’ being imprinted on the box. It just reaffirms that even after the 30 years since he died he is still venerated and loved by the world at large. Finally the image of him on the ed Sullivan show (or that’s what it looks like to me) is one of the images that sticks with me about Elvis if for all the wrong reasons, as this was the image used in Forrest Gump. His presence on the film Forrest Gump for me sums up the importance of Elvis in the world today, as he has been compared in importance to events such as Vietnam and Watergate just highlight his impact on the US and the World genuinely.
