French fries are a global food for certain, but their role in America is somewhat different. French fries have sometimes become part of political discourse, such as the time a few years ago when American and French relations were strained. There was a rush from Americans to change the name of the delicious potatoes from French fries to “freedom fries”. Despite having French in the name, French fries are not really a culturally specific food. They are eaten everywhere and in my opinion Americans see the food as a part of American culture. This speaks to the way in which Americans often import things from around the globe and turn them into parts of the American culture.
